Personally, I don't feel we have any editorial guidelines just some style rules.

I suspect it suits them to be vague, or they risk losing writers who they might decide have value next month, or make up numbers to show a thriving community. However, I hope I'm wrong, as that's not really fair on their writers.

They can fix this, it will help them embrace all the wonder instead of a small subset, and if they do they'll make Medium so much better.
